DONâT MISUSE THIS TECHNIQUE
Letâs review the important points of the little-tug-and-release method again, because applying this technique incorrectly may actually discourage Fido from walking. The tug should be ever so gentle, not a pull and not a drag but the slightest little tug, and must be followed by an immediate release. There should be no tension on the collar. Wait several seconds between each tug and release. As you work on this procedure, it helps to actually say to yourself âtug-release, tug-release, tug-release.â For whatever reason, probably dating back to the old drag-the-dog-if-he-doesnât-want-to-walk approach that so many early training books advocated, owners forget to release after the tug. Thatâs exactly what we donât want. Weâre not looking to place constant pressure on Fido, but just to give the gentlest little nudge in the right direction. Practice every day for a few minutes. Itâs not necessary, and itâs not even a good idea, to have a lengthy once-a-day training session when Fido is learning to walk on a leash. Itâs much better for him, and more likely to fit into your busy schedule, for you to practice a few minutes here and there. Keep up the praise; itâs easy to forget, particularly if Fido is a little slow to learn. The more frustrated you become, the less praise youâll probably useâthe direct opposite of what should be done. Reluctant dogs need all the praise and confidence-building they can get.
If frustration does strike, donât take it out on Fido. Go beat up your pillow, then make yourself a cup of tea, or maybe even pour yourself a glass of wine. Then take a much-needed break and try again.
